The name worth more than the woman who wore it. "Hanaōgi" — flower-fan — of the Ōgiya, the Fan House, was one of the most illustrious names in the entire Yoshiwara. It wasn't really a person so much as a title: a celebrated brand-name passed down through a succession of top-ranking courtesans, each a superstar of her generation, prized not just for beauty but for mastery of poetry, calligraphy, music and conversation. To be the Hanaōgi of the Ōgiya was to hold one of the most coveted positions in Edo's floating world — the reigning diva's stage name, inherited like a crown.

And like all crowns, it came with a cage. The Yoshiwara was a gilded prison: for all their fame and finery, these women were bought, confined, and forbidden to leave. One celebrated Hanaōgi became legend precisely for refusing that — fleeing the quarter with a lover, only to be tracked down and brought back to her glittering confinement. That's the tension Kuniyoshi's portrait carries beneath the silk: the most admired woman in Edo, and one of the least free. The series takes its name from Edo-chō 1-chōme, the most prestigious street inside the Yoshiwara, where the grandest houses stood.
