Kanō Hōgai
狩野芳崖 (Kanō Hōgai, 1828–1888) — the man who tried to save Japanese painting by transforming it. Trained in the classical Kanō school and confronted by a Meiji government importing Western art wholesale, Hōgai found a third path: Buddhist iconography painted with a boldness that owed something to both traditions and belonged entirely to neither.
