Kōno Bairei
幸野楳嶺 (Kōno Bairei, 1844–1895) — Kyoto's master of birds and flowers, and one of the most influential art educators of the Meiji period. His published collections of botanical and animal studies became reference books for a generation of artists. Every crane, every carp, every spray of cherry blossom is the result of observation so careful it borders on reverence.
