Suzuki Harunobu

鈴木春信 (Suzuki Harunobu, c. 1725–1770) — the inventor of full-colour woodblock printing. Before Harunobu, ukiyo-e prints used two or three colours at most. His development of nishiki-e — brocade pictures — in 1765 changed everything, enabling the saturated, multi-layered palettes that define the tradition. Every polychrome ukiyo-e print that came after him begins with what he figured out.
