Artwork Details
Two cranes, and in Japan a pair like this carries real weight. The crane is the great emblem of long life — folklore grants it a thousand years — but because cranes bond to a single mate for life, two of them together became the classic symbol of devotion and a marriage that goes the distance. They're the birds you'll find embroidered on wedding kimono and folded by the thousand into paper for luck and healing. The red-crowned crane, snow-bodied with its scarlet cap, is the most revered bird in the country: stately, faithful, and quietly auspicious. A pair of them is less a picture of two birds than a wish — for a long life, well shared.
