Artwork Details
The brother who couldn't live with what he'd done. Sakuramaru is one of three triplet brothers at the heart of Sugawara and the Secrets of Calligraphy, the great play built around the exile of the scholar-statesman Sugawara no Michizane — the man who died in banishment and was deified as Tenjin, god of learning. Each triplet serves a different master, and the drama turns them into three faces of loyalty tested to destruction.
Sakuramaru's is the guiltiest. A humble groom, he unwittingly helped arrange the secret meeting that let Michizane's enemies accuse him and drive him into exile. Unable to bear the ruin his small part caused his lord, he commits seppuku — the scene of Sakuramaru's suicide is one of the most quietly devastating in the repertoire, a good man destroying himself over a catastrophe he never intended. Bandō Shūka I takes the role; the character is grief given a human shape.
The actor Bando Shiuka I (坂東志う調) as Toneri Sakuramaru (舎人櫻丸), from the kabuki production Sugawara denju tenarai kagami (菅原伝授手習鑑, Sugawara and the Secrets of Calligraphy) 1850.
