Artwork Details
The demon queller who conquered chaos itself. Shōki charges forward with sword extended, robes streaming in blues and reds, his wild hair and beard whipping with the speed of pursuit. His expression is pure focused fury - eyes locked on the fleeing horde, mouth set in grim determination. He doesn't flinch, doesn't hesitate. The scattered oni tumbling ahead know what's coming, and there's nowhere left to run.
The tiger beneath him is pure predatory power. Muscles ripple beneath golden stripes as it charges, never breaking stride even with a red demon clamped between its jaws. It carries Shōki like cavalry carries a general - obedient, lethal, unstoppable. The oni in its mouth is an afterthought, casually mauled while the real hunt continues ahead. This is what happens when nature's apex predator serves supernatural justice.
Kyosai painted this for his Twelve Months series, representing May with all its explosive, untamed energy. Known for his eccentric and dynamic style, Kyosai was less refined than his predecessors, more raw and immediate. He shows Shōki not as scholarly legend but as pure supernatural cavalry - the kind of force that turns demon hordes into panicked prey.
