Artwork Details

The blind master with a secret. A kengyo was the highest rank a blind man could attain in Edo Japan — the head of the guild that organised blind musicians, masseurs and moneylenders — and on the kabuki stage, a scheming kengyo very often turns out to be a villain hiding menace behind sightless eyes.

Kunisada places Ichikawa Ebizō V in the role, inside an elegant mitate series that likens thirty-six actors to thirty-six flowers, pairing theatrical stars with the poetry of the garden.

The actor Ichikawa Ebizō V (五代目市川海老蔵) as Matsunami Kengyo (松浪検梗), from the series Tosei mitate sanjuroku kasen (當盛見立三十六花撰, Kabuki Actors Likened to a Selection of Thirty-six Flowers) 1863.

Utagawa Kunisada (歌川国貞, 1786-1865)
