The footsoldier who got a poem. The ashigaru were the bottom of the war machine — peasant foot-soldiers, conscripted from the fields, lightly armed and heavily expendable, the men who died in the thousands so that named samurai could win named glory. So there's a lovely subversion in Kuniyoshi handing one of them a sheet in a series built on the most refined court poetry in the language.
The Ogura series works by pun: a classical poem about the reeds (ashi) of Naniwa Bay gets matched, cheekily, to an ashigaru. But Kuniyoshi gives the joke real dignity — the text casts Ichiuemon as a loyal runner with "iron shins," racing the northern highroad toward Kamakura to carry urgent word for his master's house. It's the everyman elevated: the nameless grunt made, for one print, the equal of emperors and court ladies.
