Artwork Details

The scholar who became demon's nightmare. Shōki was a man of learning who failed the imperial exams and took his own life in despair. But the Tang emperor, moved by his tragic story, gave him an honorable burial. In death, Shōki found new purpose - he became the great demon hunter, stalking oni through the spirit world, his fury at injustice transformed into supernatural power.

Yoshitoshi captures him striding forward in full command, robes billowing like storm clouds, his wild hair and fierce beard streaming with supernatural energy. A small oni shuffles behind him, pressed into service - the green demon reduced to carrying his master's sword, playing attendant to the very force that hunts its kind. That golden belt cinches those flowing robes, his boots planted firm, every line of his body radiating authority.

This is from Yoshitoshi's late masterwork, New Forms of Thirty-six Ghosts, created at the turn of the 20th century when the artist was synthesizing traditional yokai imagery with more psychological depth. Shōki doesn't just hunt demons - he dominates them, turns them into servants, proves that righteous fury can bend even supernatural creatures to its will. The demon knows its place. When Shōki walks, everything else follows.

Shōki the Demon Queller (鐘馗), from the series Shinkei sanjūrokkaisen (新形三十六怪撰, New Forms of Thirty-six Ghosts) 1902.
