Artwork Details

Brothers bound by blood and vengeance. Horibe Yatsubei and Horibe Yajibei weren't just among the forty-seven—they were the family pair, the only siblings in the band of rōnin who pledged everything to avenge their fallen lord.

Yatsubei, the elder, was a spear master known for his cool precision. Yajibei, younger and fiercer, fought with the kind of reckless courage that comes from having nothing left to lose. On the night of the raid in 1703, they stormed through snow and steel together, cutting their way to justice.

Kunisada's portrait captures them at their most iconic - determined warriors who turned disgrace into legend. When the shogunate ordered them to die for their revenge, they knelt side by side and took their own lives without hesitation. Brotherhood. Honor. Blood.

Portraits of Horibe Yatsubei and Horibe Yajibei (堀辺弥津兵衛 // 堀辺弥次兵衛), from the kabuki production Kanadehon Chūshingura (仮名手本忠臣蔵, The Treasury of 47 Loyal Retainers) c1830.
